Poem

Havisham

In this poem, Duffy assumes the character of Miss Havisham - a woman who was jilted at the altar by her lover some years previously. She spends the subsequent years slowly going mad and this poem documents her insanity. She is portrayed as a bitter character, full of conflicting emotions towards her ex-lover. She is also a character for whom we feel sympathy.
